Durrës - The sea is calling

Roots, Adi Dule, Durrës, Albania
Roots, Adi Dule
The call of the sea rises above the din of the big city. You can’t ignore it especially when it is only 36 km away from Tirana. Durrës borders the Adriatic coast and it’s the natural choice for an afternoon spent outdoors against the backdrop of sea, sun and blue skies. Don’t forget your suntan lotion and lunettes de soleil, bien sur.  By the way, Durrës is pronounced du rosh.

There are a few sculptures along the seaside promenade that stand out against the stunning coastline. One of these is Roots (above) by a local artist.

But there’s more to Durrës than suntanning at the beach or sipping a nice cold drink at a café. There is the Roman Amphitheater from the 2nd Century AD which was only discovered in 1966. It could seat 15,000 or so spectators in its heyday.

Venetian Tower and the statue of Redon, God of the Sea
The Venetian Tower, which has been restored, was part of a fortified castle from the 5th century and rebuilt in the 13th century after a major earthquake destroyed the walls. There are still sections of the fortifications that remain and can be seen in the background. Note the statue of Redon, the Illyrian god of the sea by the sculptor, Ilirjan Xhixha.

Byzantine Forum
Not far from Freedom Square are the remains of the Byzantine Forum and thermal baths surrounded by residential and commercial buildings.

Corinthian columns have survived over two millenia so we can appreciate them today.

Vollga Waterfront at Durrës
Back to the call of the sea, I enjoyed my aqua therapy session before flying out of Albania which won me over with its mountains, lakes, lagoons, coastal areas, friendly people and delectable seafood.

The Fisherman, Vollga Waterfront
These whimsical pieces of sculpture are scattered throughout the city. It’s a joy finding them.

This female torso overlooks the Fisherman and the calm blue waters of the Adriatic.

 Seaside Promenade
This photo was taken on a weekday and too early in the season so there were few visitors around.

Sheshi Liria or Freedom Square
The Roman Amphitheater is just above Freedom Square. On the plaza are the Alexander Moisiu Theater and the Municipal Hall.

How to get to Durrës:
Durrës is about 36 km from Tirana and is served by a number of bus companies. You can check rome2rio.com or https://albania.al/tirana-transport/  for schedules and fares. If there are several of you traveling together, it might be economical and easier to take a taxi. Rail service between Tirana and Durrës is set to launch in early 2025.

I took a private tour to Durrës with Albania on tour with Eddy. As a solo traveler, it’s often difficult to reserve a tour for one person. I was glad a friend recommended Eddy to me and I was able to travel extensively and comfortably in Albania, North Macedonia and Kosovo. You may reach Eddy through WhatsApp 355 69 919 9085. Or contact him by email at edisonfejzulla1@gmail.com.

The Fairy Tale Town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has been on my travel bucket list for years. And I finally got there  last November. It is an enchanting place.  With its half-timbered houses, clock towers, colorful façades, schneeballs and beer steins, Rothenburg ODT oozes with medieval charm.  It's no surprise that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I was partially filmed in Rothenburg ODT. This is a common dilemma in Rothenburg ODT. Which direction to take? It's hard to choose because every cobblestone street seems to be competing for the best dressed street award. And they are all winners in my book.  After walking half a day, an inviting table for two with colorful flowers to warm a cold November day. I love how these two half-timbered buildings anchor a street that leads to another intriguing square. The Plönlein (Little Square) is the most photographed square in Rothenburg ODT. But I found more picturesque neighborhoods than this. That's ...

Midnight in Paris Movie Locations

It's not often I watch a movie but on a long flight home late last year, I had the chance to watch Midnight in Paris and was totally captivated by its plot. Can you imagine time traveling to the era of Fitzgerald and Hemingway, Picasso and Dali, Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec? It was therefore such a treat to be in Paris and be able to see a couple of the locations from the movie. Had so much fun figuring out where the Peugeot came from to pick up Gil (Owen Wilson) and take him back to the Jazz Age. Rue Galande Rue Galande is a narrow street lined with boutiques with engaging window displays. Notice the giant flea sculpture above one of the shops. This location was shown at the beginning of the film. Interestingly enough, Rue Galande is a stone's throw from the bouquinistes along the Seine and across from the Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Paris. The Steps of St. Etienne du Mont This is where Gil was sitting, a little disoriented, when the Pe...

Casapueblo and Carlos Páez Vilaró

Casapueblo, Punta Ballena Just a few minutes from the popular beach destination of Punta del Este is Casapueblo which sits on the edge of a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. If you're staying at the hotel, then you're in for a big treat. Imagine the view of the blue ocean made more dazzling by the sun. But that's not all. There's also an art gallery and museum next door which displays the artistic works of Carlos Páez Vilaró who also designed Casapueblo, his permanent home and studio. Casapueblo reminds one of the Greek isles at first glimpse. But it isn't that simple. Look closely and you'll find the influence of Gaudi in the architecture which Vilaró himself built with no plans. There are no straight lines. The interior has many passages and narrow stairs leading to enchanting rooms, everyone of which is different from the other. Notice the curving lines and the rooftops with their pointed concrete posts. Vilaró liked his house to a hornero's (ovenbird...
