Aqua Therapy in Cavtat

Cavtat and Luka Bay Many moons ago, I was lucky to have spent a week in Dubrovnik in the off season.  It was enchanting and tranquil then. I had a room at the Hilton Imperial with a view of St. Lawrence Fortress (Lovrijenac). The fortress glowed at night and it was magical! But Dubrovnik has changed quite a bit in the intervening years. Current hotel rates there are beyond my budget and the city is crowded with visitors who want to see one of the locations of Game of Thrones. So this time around, I chose to stay in Cavtat (pronounced tsav-tat). It is a small, relaxed village on the Rat peninsula just thirty minutes south of Dubrovnik. It turned out to be a great choice! Franciscan Monastery and Church of Our Lady of the Snow with  Supetar Island in the distance Račić Family mausoleum (on the hilltop) and marina Vlaho Bukovac Vlaho Bukovac (Biagio Faggioni) is one of the foremost Croatian painters and is considered an early exponent of modern Croatian art. He was born in Cavtat where he

My Amazing Ride - 2021

Pismo Beach Pier, California Traveling during the pandemic was  quite different from my previous last minute trips with no hotel reservations and lots of taken for granted expectations. There are health disclosures to fill, vaccination cards to show immigration, covid tests to take, and in some cases, travel insurance and confirmed paid hotel reservations to show the border police. Thankfully the airports were quiet at the beginning of my European trip in June but by the time I got home in July from Paris, travelers were back in droves that it took me close to three hours to get to my gate. The same was true in December when I returned from Costa Rica. LAX was full of Christmas travelers, it was hard to find any seat at the gates let alone, breathing space. Enough whining! After all, I visited 7 countries in 2021 plus the Arctic Circle, Interior Alaska and Las Vegas and had reunions with my close friends in Michigan, Amsterdam and Vienna. It was an amazing year of travel! April. After

The Museum of Broken Relationships

Broken light bulb We love, we lose, we hurt, we struggle, we heal, we move on. Here are some stories from the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia. Broken light bulb Sent from Cape Town, South Africa He loved doing things for her. He mowed her lawn, installed a shelf at her house, changed her tires. She was sweet and helpless. Then on June 25th she called him to replace a light bulb. As he was unscrewing the old light bulb, she said to him, “By the way, I’m calling this whole thing between us off. We’re just not working”.  He walked out with the light bulb as she shouted after him, “Aren't you going to put the new one in? Don’t I deserve that much?” He replied, “Hell no, you don’t deserve anything from me.” Number 2 Sent from Manila, Philippines.  Summer 2007 “He had another woman and couldn’t make me his number 1. I couldn’t stand being his number 2.” I can’t make you thin by Paul McKenna Sent from Horncastle, England This book was a present from her ex-fiancé. It’s o

Zagreb - City of Museums

Church of St. Mark’s Zagreb is a city of museums. The Museum of Broken Relationships tops the list of the most intriguing place to visit in the capital city of Croatia. And I must say that I had some of my best meals in Europe in Zagreb. Here are some highlights from my recent visit.  The 13th century Church of St. Mark’s bears the coat of arms of Zagreb (3 towers) and the medieval emblem of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. This colorful tiled roof was constructed in 1880. Ban Josip Jelačić Count Josip Jelačić was Croatias’s ban (governor) from 1848 and 1859. He was the military leader of Croatia under the Habsburg Empire and during the Hungarian revolution (1848-1849).  Jelačić Square This is a busy square leading to the main shopping street of the city. There are lots of outdoor cafés here and the funicular to the old town or if you prefer, the stairs to St. Mark’s Church and the Museum of Broken Relationships are close by. The high reliefs of this building caught my eye. I wonder if
