What’s new in Capiz?

La Casita Resort, Pawa
I recently spent a few months in Capiz and found these lovely places which have one thing in common: ambiance. Whether its the style, the light, the cozy vibe, or the relaxed mood, these places offer a je ne sais quoi charm that will make you smile.

If you’re looking to disconnect from the humdrum of daily life or to get away from the incessant noise of modern day living, look no farther than La Casita in Pawa. Less than an hour from Roxas City yet miles away from the madding crowd, you’ll find peace and relaxation by the sea. With its enchanting thatched roof cottages and Hobbit style circular doors, you’re immediately transported to a different world. They also have tents if you prefer glamping on the seashore. Check out this link for more information about La Casita: https://www.lacasitabeachresort.com/#

La Casita Restaurant and Bar
This temple of bamboo definitely gives tropical vibes as well as views of the casitas and koi pond. The restaurant serves both local and international dishes. I had their vegetable lumpia and yes, it was perfectly crisp and flavorful.

Ang Manugkagaykay (Clamdigger), Jonard Villarde
When the beach is the perfect backdrop for a stunning piece of art. Manugkagaykay is Jonard Villarde's evocative sculpture of a clam digger who is an integral part of the unique coastal culture of Capiz.

Attention to detail
Ang Manugkagaykay is at Tabai + Test Kitchen on Baybay Beach. There are also other works of art displayed at the restaurant. Instagram @tabaibaybay.

Jacque’s Coffee and Chills
Our favorite breakfast place in Roxas City. And why not? You have the view of the sea which is aqua therapy in itself. Add to that your choice of breakfast offerings. It’s an ideal start to a good day.

You’ll find several mandalas in this outdoor section of the café. The mandala is a symbol of the universe and of wholeness. It maps our spiritual journey from chaos to inner calm and healing. And these beautiful hardwood furniture were made by local craftsmen which you can purchase or have custom made for your home or office.

Little Free Library
Our very first Little Free Library was launched at Jacque’s in 2017. It’s back at its original venue this year after a short hiatus due to the pandemic. Please check it out and share or take a book.

Kaffa Haus
Come and contemplate the bygone years of Philippine history with a cuppa and a decadent cake while seated in front of this mural. Only at Kaffa Haus.

Note the capiz shell windows and the women in elegant Maria Clara dresses.

The detail is amazing.

Istorya Forest Garden, Sunday Brunch
Sunday is not a good day to have a meal at Istorya if you’re searching for peace and tranquil spaces. It’s absolutely teeming with people who look forward to an expansive buffet. There’s also a violinist who will play a Happy Birthday song for anyone who’s celebrating their birthday. It’s a lively scene!  Don’t miss the specialty shop with meticulously crafted bags and jewelry as well as paintings by local artists. Calm descends upon Istorya on weekdays and you can enjoy a stroll through the lush gardens. You can also stay overnight and have a spa treatment.

How to get around:
Tricycles can be hailed everywhere in Roxas City. Negotiate fare with the driver before getting in the cab. Other means of transport include a van that originates from the Pueblo de Panay bus terminal several times a day and goes to Culasi. Take this van to go to Jacques or Tabai. Kaffa Haus is close to the bus terminal and you can take a tricycle to get there. It may also be possible to take the van. Check with the driver. Grab is also available from Roxas City. Make sure to download their app. Southwest Tours offers metered taxi services from Roxas to any point in Capiz or Panay Island. Their number is 036 522 3069. Both Grab or a taxi would be the better choice to get to Pawa or Istorya which are both in Pan-ay.

The Fairy Tale Town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has been on my travel bucket list for years. And I finally got there  last November. It is an enchanting place.  With its half-timbered houses, clock towers, colorful façades, schneeballs and beer steins, Rothenburg ODT oozes with medieval charm.  It's no surprise that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I was partially filmed in Rothenburg ODT. This is a common dilemma in Rothenburg ODT. Which direction to take? It's hard to choose because every cobblestone street seems to be competing for the best dressed street award. And they are all winners in my book.  After walking half a day, an inviting table for two with colorful flowers to warm a cold November day. I love how these two half-timbered buildings anchor a street that leads to another intriguing square. The Plönlein (Little Square) is the most photographed square in Rothenburg ODT. But I found more picturesque neighborhoods than this. That's ...

Midnight in Paris Movie Locations

It's not often I watch a movie but on a long flight home late last year, I had the chance to watch Midnight in Paris and was totally captivated by its plot. Can you imagine time traveling to the era of Fitzgerald and Hemingway, Picasso and Dali, Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec? It was therefore such a treat to be in Paris and be able to see a couple of the locations from the movie. Had so much fun figuring out where the Peugeot came from to pick up Gil (Owen Wilson) and take him back to the Jazz Age. Rue Galande Rue Galande is a narrow street lined with boutiques with engaging window displays. Notice the giant flea sculpture above one of the shops. This location was shown at the beginning of the film. Interestingly enough, Rue Galande is a stone's throw from the bouquinistes along the Seine and across from the Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Paris. The Steps of St. Etienne du Mont This is where Gil was sitting, a little disoriented, when the Pe...

Casapueblo and Carlos Páez Vilaró

Casapueblo, Punta Ballena Just a few minutes from the popular beach destination of Punta del Este is Casapueblo which sits on the edge of a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. If you're staying at the hotel, then you're in for a big treat. Imagine the view of the blue ocean made more dazzling by the sun. But that's not all. There's also an art gallery and museum next door which displays the artistic works of Carlos Páez Vilaró who also designed Casapueblo, his permanent home and studio. Casapueblo reminds one of the Greek isles at first glimpse. But it isn't that simple. Look closely and you'll find the influence of Gaudi in the architecture which Vilaró himself built with no plans. There are no straight lines. The interior has many passages and narrow stairs leading to enchanting rooms, everyone of which is different from the other. Notice the curving lines and the rooftops with their pointed concrete posts. Vilaró liked his house to a hornero's (ovenbird...
